The
potential for a fire at sea is very real, but fortunately they are
fairly infrequent, which is undoubtedly due to both good management by
skippers and crews, and good luck. It is widely accepted that leisure
craft just aren't as well regulated as commercial shipping vehicles.
When it comes to fire safety people may be encouraged to take the bare
minimum levels of protection by their insurers, but little is done to
ensure those extinguishers are serviced and maintained, and ready to
function effectively in an emergency.
“The
progressive changes in the materials from which boats are made and
equipped has gradually increased the potential for a serious fire.”
Cruising Association
Concern
over fire safety at sea has lead to L&G Marine, fire safety
specialists within the marine environment, to launch and exhibit a new
cover plan for luxury yachts and cruisers at this year’s Southampton
Boat Show.
Marine
Business Development Manager, comments:
“Maintaining
vital fire protection equipment ensures everything works when you need
it most – in the event of a fire. An L&G Marine Fire Safety
Equipment Service contract will ensure that extinguishers, fixed fire
suppression systems and fire alarm equipment are routinely maintained to
the highest standard.”

Important
Halon information…
As well
as details of the new service plan, boat owners will also pick up
valuable advice on replacing Halon-based extinguishers. Halon is one of
the gases responsible for aiding the depletion of the Ozone layer.
Many of
the extinguishers on board leisure craft will be Halon gas based. By the
end of 2003 there is a legal obligation to have replaced all Halon-based
extinguishers with more environmentally friendly alternatives. L&G
Marine can provide these alternatives.
